Kinect 2: So Accurate It Can Read Lips?

Kinect 2: So Accurate It Can Read Lips?

Since its launch in 2010, the Kinect has changed gaming and inspired a whole new genre of hacking. But Kinect 2 might blow it out of the water, if rumors are to be believed.

According to Eurogamer, Microsoft plans to release a second-generation Kinect device that will offer improved motion sensing and even voice recognition.

How much more accurate will it be, exactly? Well, a source told Eurogamer that it should be able to lip read. If that is true, that is wild. The same source also claims that it can track the pitch and volume of player voices and facial characteristics to measure different emotional states. That definitely sound plausible, though we'll have to wait and see if Eurogamer's reports turn out to be correct.

As well as some pretty serious image processing software, I'd expect we would see a pretty hefty improvement in Kinect hardware specs to achieve these kinds of results. Especially when it comes to the CCD, which currently manages a paltry 320x240 pixel resoltuion. Whatever the spec, the new Kinect would probably launch along with the next-generation Xbox which, according to EDGE, could be available as soon as the end of 2012. [Eurogamer; Image: bfishadow]

Google lets Wi-Fi network owners opt out of mapping

Simply adding "_nomap" to the name you've given your domestic WiFi network will prevent Google Maps-equipped cellphones using your home as a position fix, Google announced last night. The idea is to allow people the chance to opt out of helping provide Google's commercial positioning service - even though doing so is likely to degrade its accuracy.

Google announced the opt-out option on its blog today in a further move to assuage the criticism it faced over its infamous Wi-Fi data sniffing operation carried out in 2010. When Google's Street View cars photographed our streets and used laser radar to get the shapes of buildings right in Google Earth, it also sniffed the air for two key ID numbers on the Wi-Fi networks at each property: the router's hardwired Media Access Control (MAC) address and the Service Set Identifier (SSID) - the name you've given your network. However, lax controls on the MAC/SSID sniffing software resulted in Google also acquiring personal data, such as snippets of our emails and web requests - leaving it censured by data protection authorities.

Why use Wi-Fi data for positioning? When phones can't get a GPS satellite fix in a built-up area, triangulating signals from either cellphone antennas and/or Wi-Fi routers can provide a reasonably accurate position fix. So, Google and rival providers like Skyhook look for and store our MAC and SSID data on their location servers.

However, pressure groups like Privacy International complain that databases of Wi-Fi IDs were surreptitiously compiled and that people should be able to opt out. This is what Google has provided today. But while adding _nomap to your SSID will prevent passing Google devices using your network, it won't stop its rivals using it. But Google hopes the opt-out format will be adopted by its rivals, too.

Man’s Lack of Twitter Followers Affects Response Time To Suicide Threats | HAHA,JK!

For a moment, I thought this was real!

------------------------

15 Nov 2011, Tuesday 08:00 pm

Toledo, Ohio (HAHAJK) – Friends and family of Dillon Sanders say, that they had no idea he’d become suicidal once no one followed him on Twitter.  According to local authorities, Sanders extreme lack of followers made it hard for others to see his tweets describing his upset mental state.

Authorities say, Saunders chose Twitter as the best place to post his cries for help, but did not take into account that he didn’t have any followers, and that he had even neglected to post a profile pic.

“He posted about 130 times in a 5 hour window, but since nobody was following him on Twitter, no one saw the messages in time to prevent him from taking his own life,” according to Toledo Police Chief Terry Paukson. “He wasn’t following anyone either, so we think it is safe to assume he didn’t understand how social media sites work.”

Chief Paukson says that had he began following others feeds he may have accrued enough follow backs that something could have been done to prevent him from taking his own life.

“Follow Fridays always seem to help people pick up followers I think,” he explains. “My kids are on there and I think that is what I heard them say.”

Saunders posted tweets like: “I’m going to do I,.” “You don’t have much time to stop me,” “I’ll wait just a few more minutes until someone shows up to stop me from actually doing I,” “Here I go. I’m serious” and “I am totally serious.” Unfortunately, no one ever saw them.

The family of Saunders is grief stricken and feel terrible for not following a member of their own family. “I was his friend on Facebook,” says his mother. “I always poked him on there. How was I supposed to know he would inform everyone of his suicide plans on a different social media outlet?”

Experts say as a rule of thumb it may be in everyone’s best interest to follow the people they care about the most on whatever social site they may be on just to be safe. Paukson says, “We all owe it to our loved ones to stay connected on Twitter and Facebook no matter how much they may bomb us with Retweets and Farmville invites. They are still our family.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Review

Modern Warfare 3 is the latest title from the massive Call of Duty franchise, developed by Infinity Ward (the studio that brought us Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2) and Sledgehammer Games.  Modern Warfare 3 starts from where the storyline finished in Modern Warfare 2, the game follows multiple characters as they encounter fire fights around the world which has been plunged into World War 3. Will Modern Warfare 3 be another hit title or will the series finally start to show signs of becoming old?

Let’s find out and kick-off its HOTs and NOTs

HOTS

Presentation

Modern Warfare 3 is a visually pleasing game. By no means are the graphics going to take the best graphics crown this year, but they still deliver a high-quality visual experience. The graphics have been slightly upgraded from Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 although this isn’t where the main improvements have come from.

Infinity Ward has however made a massive improvement when it comes to the in game sounds. Gun shots sound heavy and more realistic than ever before. Gun shots echo throughout corridors, teammates shout out across fire fights and not to mention the games explosions; all the sounds work well together to produce an engrossing atmosphere that intensifies even the smallest of shootouts

Another area of improvement in this year’s instalment is the animation. The best example of this is when changing between weapons, the on screen character doesn’t just suddenly pull up the second gun, instead the character either unfolds the stock or checks the gun slightly before the player is able to use it. This means that changing weapons does take slightly longer than in previous games but it makes the game look and feel more realistic.

Spec Ops Mode

Often known as the third mode of a Call of Duty title, the co-op section is once again full of entertaining over the top scenarios for gamers to tackle either by themselves, with a friend or a random player from somewhere around the world. The majority of the missions won’t take players too long to complete but they are all enjoyable enough to warrant replaying the levels, especially with friends.

Google TV might not suck in the future | The Download Blog – Download.com

To get you up to speed, Google TV came out last year to a lukewarm response. Very few people adopted it, which prompted a complete redesign. That redesign was then realized last week with the release of Google TV 2.0, but unfortunately, at least one critic still found the updated platform plagued with problems. For instance, while CNET's Matthew Moscovciak conceded that the new Android Honeycomb interface is sleek, he still considered the overall experience clunky and frustrating. And I'd have to agree.
